The Chicago Pedway links roughly 5 miles of downtown Chicago. Construction began in 1951. Over time, the network expanded to connect approximately 50 buildings across 40 blocks. Because these buildings were built at different times, their basement levels do not align. This patchwork design limits accessibility.

Is the Chicago Pedway fully ADA accessible?

No, the underground system is not completely ADA accessible.

You will encounter stairs at several transition points between properties. The floor levels between the 50 connected buildings rarely match up perfectly. This forces pedestrians to navigate short flights of stairs to continue through the tunnels.

Are there elevators to bypass the stairs?

You can find elevators inside the connected private buildings, but not in the tunnels themselves.

To bypass a set of stairs, you often have to exit the tunnel system. You must ride an elevator up to street level, cross the street, and re-enter the next building. This makes continuous underground travel very difficult for wheelchair users.

Is the Chicago Pedway stroller friendly?

You can use a stroller, but you will need to lift it over several staircases.

If you have a lightweight stroller, you can manage the uneven sections by carrying it. For larger strollers, you face the same elevator detours as wheelchair users. Keep to the right side of the passages, as tens of thousands of fast-paced commuters use the Pedway daily.

Where are the most accessible entrances?

Major transit hubs and modern retail centers offer the easiest access.

Millennium Station and Block 37 have modern elevators connecting directly to the underground concourses. Historic buildings like the Chicago Cultural Center also have ramp access and elevators connecting to the system.

Are there accessible restrooms in the Pedway?

Restrooms are rarely available directly within the tunnel corridors.

You must use the facilities inside the connected public buildings. The Chicago Cultural Center offers free public restrooms. Keep in mind that normal operating hours for most segments are weekdays from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Are guided Pedway tours wheelchair accessible?

Most guided walking tours cover routes that include stairs.

Professional guided walking tours typically cost between $35 and $45 per person. Because guides navigate the complex network to show specific architectural details, they often use routes with stairways. Contact your tour operator beforehand to ask about accessible routes.
